How to Write a Good Review: Structure, Examples and Templates for Google

A good review is specific, honest and polite. If you want to write a good review, you only need three building blocks: the occasion, two or three details and a recommendation. Add the stars and a Google account, and you are done. Further down you will find templates you can adapt with your own words.

This guide shows how writing a review on Google works, which mistakes to avoid and which examples fit which industry. Businesses will also find tips at the end on how to make reviewing easier for their customers.

The short answer in six points

  • Structure: occasion, details, recommendation. Three to five sentences are enough.

  • Content: describe what exactly was good, for example advice, speed or result.

  • Tone: friendly, factual and honest, without exaggeration.

  • Technique: you need a Google account, open Google Maps and tap "Write a review".

  • Name: since November 2025 you can use a freely chosen display name in Google Maps.

  • Taboo: advertising, links, insults and reviews without a real experience.

The 3-part formula for a good review

PartKey questionExample1. OccasionWhat were you there for, and when?"We came for dinner on Saturday, four of us."2. DetailsWhat was specifically good or less good?"The service was attentive, the pasta fresh and the wait short."3. RecommendationWould you come back or recommend them?"We'll gladly come again and recommend booking ahead."

One detail counts more than three superlatives. Anyone who writes what was good helps other readers decide.

A good review compared with a weak one

Weak reviewGood reviewLengthOne word, such as "Great!"Three to five sentencesContentOnly praise or only angerSpecific detailsToneExaggerated or hurtfulFactual and fairValue for readersSays very littleHelps with the decisionExample"Everything perfect, 5 stars!""Quick appointment, clear explanation, fair advice."

Templates you can adapt: examples by industry

Change the templates and add your own experience. Copied texts look unconvincing.

Restaurant (5 stars): "We were here on Friday evening, just the two of us. The staff were friendly, the food came quickly and tasted great, especially the risotto. We'll be back!"

Medical practice (5 stars): "I got an appointment at short notice and hardly had to wait. The doctor took her time and explained everything clearly. I feel well looked after." Tip: do not write health information into a public review.

Tradesperson (5 stars): "The appointment was kept on time, the work was done cleanly and the price matched the quote. We recommend this company."

Garage (4 stars, critical and fair): "The repair was done professionally. The wait was longer than announced, but I was kept informed in a friendly way. Overall I am satisfied."

Hairdresser or beauty (5 stars): "The advice was honest and I got exactly the cut I wanted. The appointment started on time and the atmosphere was relaxed. I'll be back."

Hotel (4 stars): "The room was clean and quiet, and breakfast offered plenty of choice. The Wi-Fi was slow one evening, but the team took care of it at once. We would book again."

Service provider or online shop (5 stars): "The order arrived earlier than stated and was well packaged. When I had a question, customer service replied within a few hours. Gladly again."

Short version (5 stars): "Friendly, fast, fair. Gladly again."

How many stars fit your experience?

StarsFits when …What to add in the text5everything was good and you recommend themWhat exactly convinced you4almost everything was good, one point could improveThe praise and the one point3a mixed experienceWhat was good and what was not2you were mostly unhappyFacts and what you had expected1the experience was clearly badFactual, with date and occasion

Choose stars that match your text. Five stars with a complaint, or one star with pure praise, look contradictory.

Wording help: words that deliver details

AspectPossible wordingServicefriendly, attentive, helpful, competentQualitycleanly made, fresh, reliable, thoroughSpeedon time, done quickly, short waitValue for moneyfair, transparent, matches the quoteAtmospherecozy, relaxed, tidy, quiet

From weak to good: "Great shop, highly recommended!" becomes: "I brought my bike in. The repair was finished the same day, the price was fair and the explanation was easy to follow. I gladly recommend the shop." The second text says more in three sentences than any superlative.

How to write the review on Google in 5 steps

  1. Open Google Maps and sign in with your Google account.

  2. Search for the business and open its profile.

  3. Tap "Reviews" and then "Write a review".

  4. Give stars, write your text and add a photo if you like.

  5. Tap "Post". Done.

The button labels can change. You can edit or delete your review at any time.

Anonymous or with your name?

Your review appears under the display name of your Google account. Since November 2025 you can use a freely chosen display name in Google Maps. Google still knows the account. You can read more in the article on the anonymous Google review.

What you should not write

  1. Insults or threats. They break Google's policies.

  2. Personal data. Do not name employees or share health information.

  3. Advertising or links. They do not belong in a review.

  4. Reviews without a real experience. Reviewing in return for rewards is not allowed either.

  5. Texts written in anger. Sleep on it first.

If you write a critical review, stick to facts: what happened, when, and what did you expect? That sounds fair and is taken seriously.

Checklist before you submit

  1. Did I name the occasion (what, when, where)?

  2. Does the text include at least two specific details?

  3. Do the stars and the text match?

  4. Is the tone friendly and factual?

  5. Have I checked spelling and personal data?

Anyone who ticks off these five points usually writes a review that other customers really read and that businesses take seriously.

Phone tip: Write the text in your notes app first and then copy it into the review field. That way a longer text is not lost if the app crashes.

Why good reviews matter so much for businesses

Honest, detailed reviews help customers choose and influence visibility on Google. For small businesses they are often the strongest argument, because many people read the reviews first and then decide whether to call, book or drop by. A review with details can replace some advertising. How reviews feed into local ranking and why single stars weigh heavily is shown in how negative reviews hurt your location.

For businesses: how to help customers review you

  • Ask in person right after the appointment, not weeks later.

  • Hand over a short guide: "Write what you came for, what was good and whether you recommend us."

  • Keep your profile complete. Full details build trust, and the Business Profile checklist helps.

  • Collect ideas. You will find six more steps in improve your Google Maps rating.

Do not offer rewards and do not ask only satisfied customers. Both break Google's policies.

If you find an unfair review as a business

Not every review is honest. Signs of fake reviews are shown in spotting fake reviews, and how to handle genuine criticism is covered in the guide to negative Google reviews.

If, after your check, a review breaks Google's policies, you can submit it for checking. Mapnovi handles the technical submission, and Google reviews and decides. What is included is listed on the services page, and the process is described in the article how the removal works at Mapnovi. You can follow progress in the status lookup, find the conditions in the terms and conditions and read how your data is handled in the privacy policy. To get started, submit a review.

An honest note: nobody can guarantee a result, and Mapnovi does not carry out legal reviews. Agencies will find details in the partner portal and in becoming a Mapnovi partner.

Frequently asked questions about writing a review
